Catch of The Day - Scriffon - 8/31/2011

Scriffon is a free, minimalist, text-publishing website open to everyone to publish any kind of written work on the web: from essays to short novels to how-tos.

20110823-fhbbk76hffsm7g65h5ck93sd38.jpg

You can create drafts of your writing and spend the time you need to polish them on Scriffon. Then publish and share them to the world when you feel as though they're ready. Even after publishing, you can modify them and publish them again.

20110823-ndkiunayecfk4x3w3j23mngu34.jpg

Scriffon approaches text publishing differently from ordinary blogs. Every writing published on Scriffon is presented in the same bare-bones format with an emphasis on clarity and readability. Authors and readers can focus on their texts.

A unique feature of Scriffon is the collaborative translations. You publish the original version of the writing, and you are the only one who can edit and update it. But every user of Scriffon can contribute to the translations of that writing.

20110823-1944asugc626742tjgp5xanyi.jpg

Scriffon stores both your drafts and your published works so you can access them from any web-connected device.

Catch of The Day - FreshBrain - 8/18/2011

FreshBrain provides a safe social-networking-based environment where teens can explore technology-related activities, create projects of their own, show and share their work, and connect with other students while learning technology and 21st century skills.

20110811-gh22ajw756qs82cippbm55cra5.jpg

FreshBrainActivity is a comparatively simple, pre-designed task typically independently undertaken by one or more students who take an idea and create something useful. An Activity usually would be completed in a few of days or weeks. There are two types of activities: Open and Sponsored. Open activities are always available to students to complete. Sponsored activities are available for a limited duration with a deadline and rewards.

20110811-n7pjiwxrfjdke2mp484g7tfhf6.jpg

A Project is a more extensive task where one or more students take an idea and turn it into something substantial. A project can range from something that one person completes in a number of weeks to one completed by a team of students over a number of months. A Project usually involves going through a systematic process to simulate real world scenarios where things are justified through some quantifiable metrics, including preparing an action plan and building the actual end product.

20110811-fsjy6ekcnnjw26ncysef5jx1k7.jpg

Students who take on projects may request a FreshBrain advisor who will provide the necessary guidance to help them be successful. Advisors are trained on the FreshBrain processes and tools and must complete a background check.

Catch of The Day - The Corpus of Contemporary American English - 8/17/2011

The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) is the largest freely-available corpus* of English, and the only large and balanced corpus of American English.

20110809-73ca6d6e2sxf6qf6gypkxc3r8.jpg

The Corpus of Contemporary American English was created in 2008, at Brigham Young University, and it is now used by tens of thousands of users every month. COCA is also related to other large corpora including the British National Corpus, the 100 million word TIME Corpus, and the new 400 million word Corpus of Historical American English.

20110809-mri2855yyupubqyd1dix9j6h34.jpg

The Corpus of Contemporary American English contains more than 425 million words of text equally divided among spoken, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, and academic texts. It includes 20 million words for each year since 1990, and the corpus is also updated at least annually. Because of its design, it is suitable for looking at current, ongoing changes in the language.

You can search for exact words or phrases, wildcards, lemmas, parts of speech, or any combinations. You can search for surrounding words within a 10 word window (e.g. all nouns somewhere near faint, all adjectives near woman, or all verbs near feelings), which often gives you good insight into the meaning and use of a word.

20110809-b1pa46x2udu1j8ydh71sc3un1d.jpg

With COCA, you can also easily carry out semantically-based queries of the corpus. For example, you can contrast and compare the words near two related words (little/small, democrats/republicans, men/women), to determine the difference in meaning or use between these words.

*a collection of written or spoken material in machine-readable form, assembled for the purpose of studying linguistic structures, frequencies, etc.
