Teachers, evaluating student writing at all grade levels, identified common characteristics of good writing. These qualities became the framework for the 6+1 Trait® Writing model. Common language and scoring guides are used to communicate the characteristics of writing and define "what 'good' writing looks like."

The traits are:

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Voice
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence fluency
  • Conventions
  • Presentation

Organized around the traits and grade level, teachers can use the 6+1 Trait® Writing Lesson Plans search form to find lessons that will work with their students and are specific to their students' needs.
