Reading Bear is a free online program using innovative rich media to teach beginning readers vocabulary and concepts while introducing the main phonetic patterns of written English.
Reading Bear, a project of WatchKnowLearn.org, is aimed mainly at children ages 4-7 who are learning to read. The concepts, vocabulary, and the presentations were designed specifically with children in this age range in mind.
Each Reading Bear presentation introduces a small number of related “phonics rules”. A presentation is playable either as a video or as an interactive slide show and are available in seven different versions. In the fullest version, a word is sounded out slowly and quickly, then blended slowly, and finally blended quickly. Corresponding letters are highlighted as sounds are pronounced. A picture illustrating the word is displayed, a sentence is shown with the individual sounds again highlighted, and finally a video illustrating the sentence plays.

At this time, Reading Bear has 14 presentations with plans to increase the number to about 50, so that eventually well over 1200 items of vocabulary will be given the Reading Bear treatment.
Reading Bear and WatchKnowLearn are free, ad-free, non-profit projects of the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
