Substance is a fully web-based document authoring and publishing platform that allows teachers and students interested in publishing to use an open platform for writing and sharing articles in a collaborative way.

The focus of Substance is on content, leaving the layout part to the system, not the writer. Because there are no formatting utilities, Substance facilitates structured, content-oriented writing. Substance aims at open collaboration, allowing readers to participate and comment.

Substance uses a uniform data format that allows cross media publishing to a variety of formats such as print (PDF, LaTex), ebook (ePub, Kindle) or website integration (HTML, Markdown). Images can be embedded in Substance documents, too.

Substance is free to use, open source software licensed under GPLv3.
