The Collaborative for Student Success is a grant-making initiative that pools the resources of a diverse group of education foundations.

 

Committed to improving public education, the members of the Collaborative for Student Success share the concept that successfully putting the Common Core State Standards into effect is important to ensuring that all students are prepared for school and life.

 

Their mission is to "support the state-led efforts of State Education Agencies and local education organizations responsible for educating and informing all stakeholders—parents, students, teachers and community leaders—about the new state standards and assessments."

 

The Collaborative is providing grants to:

• aid state and local efforts to effectively inform about the standards and assessments.
• ensure that teachers’ voices are heard both locally and nationally as implementation moves forward.
• involve higher education leaders and business representatives in dialogue about the standards.

 

 

Thus far, Collaborative for Student Success grantees have included groups representing state departments of education, state advocacy organizations, educator-led organizations, faith-based organizations, and local chambers of commerce.

Featured 4-30-2014: Math & Movement

 

A kinesthetic, multi-sensory approach to teaching math, Math & Movement incorporates physical exercise, stretching, cross-body movements, yoga, and visually-pleasing floor mats designed to encourage students to practice math.

 

Students physically hop, walk, crawl, dance, or touch the mats and banners as they learn, thereby using visual, auditory, motor, and kinesthetic learning processes.

 

 

Math & Movement takes advantage of children's natural inclination for movement and creative imagination to master basic math. The floor mats and banners cover the concepts of addition, subtraction, telling time, skip-counting, multiplication, division, fractions, factoring, positive/negative numbers, Cartesian coordinates, money, unit circle, place value, decimals, percents, rounding, and probability.

 

The movements are divided into six categories:

• Active Math: Whisper/Loud Movements - Designed to give your students physical exercise while simultaneously enhancing math and reading ability.
• Active Math: Skip Counting Movements - Designed to provide additional physical exercise while learning the multiples.
• Sit-Down Math Activities - Designed for quiet time and involve stretching.
• Tapping at the Table Activities - Designed to be used in between other activities, while students sit at their desks.
• Hallway Math Activities - Designed to be used walking in the hallway to and from lunch, PE, art, music, computer or library.
• Math 'n Yoga Activities - Incorporate math practice into popular yoga moves.

The Math & Movement program is based on research that suggests that moving during learning facilitates muscle memory, an important factor with younger children whose abstract thinking skills are not fully developed. It also draws on research suggesting that cross-body movements integrate the left and right hemisphere of the brain, waking up a sleepy brain and helping to establish newly learned material in memory.

While developing their math skills, Math & Movement lets students simultaneously experience an overall sense of well-being. Using these activities during the day, before testing, or during transitions, allows teachers and students to feel energized, focused, calm, and prepared to learn.

GetEdFunding has currently collected more than 1,000 grants and opportunities from federal, state, regional, and community sources. GetEdFunding is monitored, updated, and expanded daily.

You can search GetEdFunding by six criteria, including 41 areas of focus, 8 content areas, and themes and skills that support your curriculum. Once you are registered, you can save the grants of greatest interest, then return to read about them at any time.




GetEdFunding is sponsored by CDW-G and created by educational professionals for educational professionals. It’s meant to be an easy-to-use, relevant, and reliable database that will be used again and again. Catch of the Day - Helping Our Schools - /2011

Helping Our Schools is a blog by Bruce Brown intended to help teachers acquire resource materials through grants, funding, and donations.

Brown has been developing and publishing supplemental educational materials for more than 30 years.  He has started working with schools to identify grants and a variety of non-government funding sources to help teachers acquire resources for their classrooms. He launched Helping Our Schools as a central repository for that information.

Here Comes 2008-09!

The state's CFF budget was cut from $90 million to $45 million, so it's no surprise that our 2008-09 budget at MVHS was substantially reduced. We received approximately half the funding we got last year.

Obviously, we will not be able to extend the program fully to 11th and 12th grades as had been planned. We were able to manage our funds so as to allow us to integrate 11th and 12th grade math and English, however. Joining the CFF program for the upcoming school year will be Jon Deemer (math), Tom Webb (English), and Tiffany Cover (English), with Bob Lewis (English) taking the place of the retired Denise McCloskey.

Bob will inherit McCloskey's classroom equipment, while Jon, Tom, and Tiffany will each be equipped with a laptop, an interactive whiteboard, and a projector. Thirty-three new student laptops will be added bringing the total to 96.
