Catch of the Day - SpellBee.org - 9 Oct 09

The current catch-of-the-day is Spellbee.org

SpellBee.org is a new kind of spelling activity. Each time a student plays, she will be able to choose a partner and play a word game with him.

SpellBee.org is totally free, web-based, and runs in most modern browsers that have Java installed and enabled.

Teachers can register as SpellBee teachers who will be provided with everything they need to get their classes involved, and will be able to monitor the progress of each of their students. See the PDF flyer for teachers.

Currently the available vocabulary includes approximately 3,000 words of varying difficulties. According to the developers, in the future, teachers may be able to customize SpellBee with a specific list of words.

SpellBee.org does not collect the names and email addresses of children; they choose a nickname for themselves. There is no chat or email contact through the site. Teachers and parents will be able to request information about a student's record if a child provides her teacher's nickname or her parents' email address.

SpellBee.org is a project of the DEMO laboratory at Brandeis University, directed by Professor Jordan Pollack. Spellbee.org was written by DEMO lab member Ari Bader-Natal.
