Catch of the Day - Portaportal - 9 Feb 10

Today's catch is Portaportal

Portaportal is a web based bookmarking utility that lets you store links to your favorite websites online. Now your bookmarks are no longer limited to any one machine and can be easily shared with your students.

Sample Page

Then, the next time you come across a website that you like, simply copy the URL, go to Portaportal, and add it to your portal. This way no matter where you or your students are when surfing the web, the bookmark will be waiting.

You let your students read (but not change) your portal by allowing public access. By default it's off when you create an account. But you can go into the preferences page and turn it on. Then you can give out the URL:

http://guest.portaportal.com?YourLoginName

where the phrase YourLoginName is substituted with your actual login name.

Portaportal solves the problem of having students trying to type in complicated URL, making errors, wasting time, falling behind, and becoming frustrated.

If you upgrade to the pro version of Portaportal ($15), you get the ability to upload files for students to download, as well as an ad-free portal.

PortaPortal is a nice way to share sites with students. Especially in the elementary classroom, expecting students to type in long URLs correctly the first time is a dream. This is a much better use of class time!

This does sound like a good way to share links with students. I cringe when a teacher brings a class into the lab and attempts to write a long url on the board for the students to copy. I will be glad to pass this one along!!
